Installation Guidelines:

For JoJo Poly Septic tanks & Conservancy Tanks

Septic tank or conservancy tank to be installed in natural soil only

One hole per tank (no mass graves!)

Place a base of 100-150mm sand in the hole and level out.

Place the 50mm white PVC pipe into position. (The long end fits into the nipple at the base of the tank with the short end through the 50mm hole provided.) THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO THE CONSERVANCY TANKS!

Place the tank into the hole and fill with water. (The conservancy tank must be strapped down.)

Make a mixture of 10 units of sand to 1 unit of cement. Throw this mixture in layers of 300-400mm around the tank. Saturate each layer with water. Do this procedure all the way to the top. Fill the entire hole.

Connect the pipes.

The 50mm outlet pipe must run into a “French” drain (SEPTIC TANKS)

Place a Bacteria Starter Pack into the SEPTIC TANK to start the fermentation process. (A piece of rotten meat is very effective.)

CONSERVANCY tanks must be emptied out when full.

It is recommended that members of IOPSA install these tanks.

Soakaway

Also known as a French drain, drainage field or leach field, the soakaway is an integral part of the septic tank system. It allows partially treated effluent from the septic tank to ‘soak away’ into the surrounding soil where it is progressively ‘polished’ back to potable quality as it seeps ever further downwards through the ground towards the natural water table.

A soakaway under construction

The efficiency of the soakaway depends upon:

  1. The porosity of the soil;
  2. The length of the drainage trench in relation to the number of residents in the dwelling.
  3. How it’s constructed – it must be built along the contour without any gradient. It need not be straight, but it must follow the contour.
